5 New Careers for Graduate Students that Are Coming of Age

The world is always changing, and the job market also changes to keep up with it. New careers are always developing, although some catch on better than others. A graduate degree in business administration can lead you down the path of several new and exciting careers, while other useful graduate degrees may be in healthcare, computer programming, or graphic design. Graduate studies in accounting can also be beneficial.

Here are some of the newer graduate level careers that are catching on.

1. Home Health Aide

You can get a career as a home health aide if you have a master's degree in nursing. In this position, you would be helping people who have chronic illnesses or are disabled right in their own homes. Home health aides can also work in hospices and help all patients with small tasks such as dressing, light housekeeping, and food preparation. This career has been around for a while, but is currently experiencing a great deal of growth.

2. Online Video Game Design

Online video games have greatly increased in popularity in recent years. In fact, studies show that over 200 million people play online games each month alone. There is a great demand for people who can design them and make the games work, so graduate level degrees in computer programming and graphic design are a must for this career. Specialized degrees in online game design will also be helpful to anyone wanting to break into this promising career field.

3. Social Media Strategist

A graduate degree in the appropriate area can help you land a fun career as a social media strategist. These individuals are responsible for using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to get the word out to the public about a company's products or services. They also figure out the best ways to go about achieving this end. Blogging is also a popular tool in this profession. Graduate degrees that are relevant to this career include:

  • Business administration, or MBA
  • Marketing
  • Public relations
  • Web design and development

4. Forensic Accounting

Forensic accounting is an up-and-coming career that investigates business crimes such as embezzlement, fraud, and bankruptcy. They can even investigate cases of suspected money laundering. To become a forensic accountant, you must have certification as a public accountant. An MBA or master's degree in accounting can help put you on the road to this career. This might be a good choice for you if you enjoy a good mystery and working with numbers.

5. E-mail Marketing Manager

In order to save money, many companies have decided to employ e-mail marketing managers to send out promotional e-mails to potential customers and clients. This means that they will not have to pay the postage that is required to send physical promotion notices to people via the mail. This is still a relatively new method, but earning a master's in business administration can help you get ready for this career path. A graduate degree in marketing could also be beneficial and provide you with the knowledge necessary to pursue this career.
