Five Best Masters in Homeland Security Schools

Five Best Masters in Homeland Security Schools

There are two factors to take into account when considering a career in Homeland Security: the first is that within the Department of Homeland Security there are a variety of employment opportunities and that most of the federal law enforcement agencies fall under the direction of this federal agency. This includes the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), the Secret Service, Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Border Patrol. In addition, military and disaster response organizations also are part of the DHS. These include the Coast Guard, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The second factor to consider is that areas of specialization may exist within each undergraduate or graduate degree and that these could help students to develop the beginnings of a career track while still in school.

While institutions such as U.S News & World Report do not rank or publish rankings on schools that offer security training, there are many schools that are recognized by Department of Homeland Security for their offerings. The Department of Homeland Security recognizes the following academic institutions for their contributions to science and technology programs in security education. These schools also received DHS Career Development Grants in 2011:

  1. Stevens Institute of Technology
  2. University of Connecticut
  3. Northeastern University
  4. State University of New York
  5. University of Maryland

Several other schools also received development grants in 2011. Be sure to check with your school to determine what degree specializations are available in Homeland Security as well as to find out more about admissions requirements and the projected time recommended for completing a degree.
