Five Master of Forensics Schools

There are graduate degrees in several fields that feature forensics as the principal educational focal point. Forensics can be central to a degree in information technology, in psychology, in criminal justice, in laboratory sciences, and in nursing. The technology and types of research that are applied to the development of courtroom evidence has made investigators out of professionals in all of these fields and more. Medical personnel and psychologists trained in forensics often make careers out of providing expertise on the witness stand, in civil and in criminal trials. The term "forensics" is even applied to the counseling profession today in the criminal justice context for the purpose of determining an accused party's mindset prior to and at the time of commission of a crime. The juvenile courts rely heavily on reports provided by professionals in forensic interviewing.

1. Argosy University has a Master of Forensic Psychology program that is offered at several of the nineteen campuses operated by the University in thirteen states. There is also an online version of the degree available offered as a thirty six credit hour program consisting of twelve courses. The studies in forensics include courses in Forensic Program Development & Evaluation, Interrogation & Interviewing, Psychology of the Victim, Maladaptive Behavior & Psychopathology, and Consultation, Triage, & Testimony in Forensic Psychology.

2. Loyola University of New Orleans Online is a small Jesuit school that has been in operation for over 100 years. The school has opted to expand into online education, following a trend among traditional universities that are recognizing the changing patterns in higher education. Loyola offers an online Master of Criminal Justice degree with specialization in Forensic Science Administration. One of the focal points of this degree is the use of forensic laboratories and the accreditation, certification programs, and budgetary restraints associated with them. The curriculum also delves into the development of forensic evidence for courtroom usage and the laws and legislation that govern its use.

3. University of Maryland University College is one of the largest providers of online education in the United States. It is also one of the degree granting institutions within the Maryland University System with classroom locations in several sites around the state. UMUC offers an online Master of Science in Cybersecurity with substantial focus on the forensics aspect of the information assurance profession. The curriculum addresses the standard issues of monitoring, penetration testing, auditing, intrusion detection, and intrusion prevention. Understanding all of these techniques adds to the studies in Cyber Crime Investigation & Digital Forensics.

4. Chicago School of Professional Psychology offers both the Masters in Forensic Psychology and a PsyD program in Forensic Psychology. Both degrees are offered on the Chicago and Washington DC campuses. The Master of Forensic Psychology in Applied Forensic Psychology Services is offered in online/blended format. This degree differs from the campus offering in that it focuses on applied usage of the skills that are taught, in criminal justice environments and in locations such as child welfare agencies and family intervention situations in a law enforcement incident.

5. Utica College offers an online Master of Cybersecurity with specialization in Computer Forensics. The program provides training with the forensic tools and methods that are used to investigate network-based incidents, including data theft, and the illegal use of digital devices of all types. The proliferation of mobile devices and computer tablets and the development of Wi-Fi networks that are vulnerable to hacking makes this academic field a fast moving one, with constant changes in the nature of forensic investigation techniques.
