Related Questions & Answers

Q: Need professional advice: should i drop my math major to graduate early and take a business internship?
A: I'm going to go counter to the other responders and say to drop your math to a minor and focus more on finance and business. You've already said that math was originally just a back-up plan but you realized that actuarial work was not for you. You have more than enough math for what you really want to do so anything beyond that is not necessary....I know, someone will make the argument that an education never goes to waste but you do eventually reach a point of diminishing returns on taking additional classes.

Also, based on the tone of your posting and the info you provided, it seems that you've lost your interest in pure mathematics. There's nothing wrong with that and making a C because you just weren't interested is a sign that this is not the direction you want to go. I went through a similar situation in college and ended-up changing my major and going in a totally different career direction (which I am very glad I did).

As for your third and fourth points, I don't think either will hurt you for acceptance into Florida. You're education and background should still be plenty strong to get you consideration for graduate school. Good luck.

Other Related Questions & Answers

  • Should I pick a graduate school based on affordability or location? Pick one that is easy...don't over exert yourself. You could get sick.
  • How to get an internship with a "Big Four" accounting firm? Any recruiters in South Florida? education.mypressonline.com - I found such internship info here. It has lots of internships, job openings and scolarships for college students.
  • Bad credit, about to enroll in graduate school. Need advice? Sounds like maybe you should consider Law School and put away that viper of a father and throw away the key.

    Just kidding.

Actually, when you are accepted into a Master's program you will be eligible for $138,500 in Stafford loans (they are not credit based) but unfortunately, unless you are over 24 years old, or about 8 other things, you will still be considered a dependent student. This means you will have to fill out the new 10-11 FAFSA form using a parent's income as well as yours. That's all. Your father is not LEGALLY supposed to get or cash any student loan checks that are in your name. You will need to make sure your FA Office knows this history and they and the business office has YOUR correct address to send any refund checks.

And by the way, if you do go to NY for grad school, you may have to pay out of state tuition for the first year. But it'd be worth it to get away from that monster/father that seems to have spawned a pretty smart kid.
  • Looking to move to Maryland Area/DC Perhaps...pros and cons? Sorry you are not happy in New York. As a Marylander, I can say that I agree with your views of the people in this Old Line State. People are people, of course, but Maryland has some of the best around in my opinion.

Wow! If you think Maryland's hot in the summer, wait until you experience a summer in Nevada!!!! Temps that top 105 are not unusual out there, but a real rarity here. And don't tell me it's a dry heat. It is still too hot to breathe! Maryland's heat is moist because of all of our water in the lakes, rivers, bay and ocean.

Don't know where you lived in MD, but there are lots of Latinos around here. We have a strong population with diverse cultures. Walk down any street in Bethesda, Takoma Park, Silver Spring and you'll pass people from as many ethnicities as there are countries in this world.

Some of our wonderful towns, in addition to those mentioned, are Frederick, Annapolis, Baltimore, Havre de Grace. The list is too long to mention here, but all are fabulous, friendly and ready to welcome new people with open arms. You will NOT have a culture clash at all. Gaithersburg, Germantown, Damascus, Silver Spring, Wheaton, Takoma Park are all strongly Hispanic if you think you'd feel more comfortable. But most of us are ready to make you feel at home no matter where you settle.
