  • Whats the difference between a police officer with a degree and one without one? nothing really, you will start out the same as any other officer, i have a ba in criminal justice and am a police officer. the degree will most definitely improve your chances of being hired. a lot of departments are very selective. your prior knowledge will help in the academy, again some academies are easier than others. our academy has a drop out rate of 20-40%. the hardest part will be physical in most academies. a degree will probably certainly help with promotions, our promotions consist of points accumulated by yrs of service, physical fitness test scores, and oral interviews, a college degree adds points to the final score. a degree will also help with your reputation in the court room, some people assume you are more professional because of a degree.
  • What kind of job can I get (in behavior analysis) with a Bachelor's in Psychology? McDonalds is always hiring.

Probably not behavior analysts, but I'm sure more than a few psychology graduates.

  • Community College or Virginia Tech? Hello! Congratulations on your graduation. I know that it is difficult to make these decisions and sounds like you have found a nice place to live and friends that you care about. I don't know if your friends will be going to the local community college or if they have other plans. After high school, things change. People say one thing and then it changes. Sometimes, it is very hard to keep your high school friends after they have moved on...even if it is working at Starbucks. :) I suggest that you talk with a counselor at your high school or a counselor through your medical provider. Since your dad is in the military, you should have The TRICARE benefit. I think you'll benefit with meeting with someone 'neutral' to talk about the pro's and con's and what is best for you. Your parents sound wonderful and supportive. I know that they want what is best for you. As you know, VA Tech is an outstanding school. I don't know if you visited the campus. It has a strong residential program and the students do form good connections. No matter what you decide, your heart may pull at you. And you should know that all freshmen have some type of 'regret' about going away to college, their major, and starting out again. My best to you. Good luck!
