The department is very forward thinking and emphasizes the importance of scholarship and community participation. Students learn the most cutting-edge issues and research methods in the field, and they also have countless opportunities to participate in an urban community where understanding of criminology and justice is greatly needed. The school offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The school also offers some special programs for working professionals who cannot attend school full-time.

Master of Science in Criminal Justice:

Students begin this program with a basic education in core criminology issues. They learn the basics of scholarship and research by developing an understanding of many of the core issues facing the urban community today. They learn about the criminal justice system, correctional facilities, police procedure, and policy and law. Students also learn about modern day issues, such as integrated multi-cultural communities. Students work on independent projects with faculty advisors. They also participate in a number of community projects and organizations. Students who complete this program work in government agencies at the state and federal level, and they also go on to pursue PhD degrees.

PhD in Criminal Justice:

This program is for students who are serious about criminal justice scholarship. These students begin with a more advanced study of concepts and issues studies in the master program. Students choose individual areas of study and work closely with faculty advisors to begin PhD dissertations. Students participate in the community at a number of different levels for the purposes of outreach and experiential research. Those who complete this program teach criminology at graduate and undergraduate schools. They also become government officials, write policy, and continue advanced scholarship.

Albany State University Graduate School:

This school offers a variety of master programs in a number of different fields. The school also offers a number of programs for working professionals who do not have the opportunity to pursue full-time graduate programs due to other obligations, such as work and family. The school is well known for its faculty and emphasis on practical application of ideas learned in classes.

Master of Science in Criminal Justice:

This program begins with a core education in the key issues of the field. Students work closely with faculty to analyze data and learn how to practically apply the theories and conclusions reached in class.
