A bumper crop of corporate and peer-to-peer sharing services have overwhelmed the Internet in the past year, with companies such as Zipcar and Airbnb out to prove that sharing is better than owning.  In addition to sharing big-ticket items such as cars or vacation rentals, niche sharing sites allow you to do things like find a home for your dog during vacations using DogVacay or connect with local tour guides on Vayable.

San Francisco, the nation’s unofficial Share Capital, is home to many of these new companies, but even in the friendly Bay area, sharing services have faced regulatory hurdles and calls for taxation. Take a look at how much sharing can save you—and where it might cost you—in the infographic below.
