  1. Masters of Medical Informatics (MMI): This degree requires a blend of clinical knowledge and mastery of data technology. Generally students who enroll in an MMI program have a medical background or some IT experience. Northwestern University offers an online MMI.
  2. Masters in Clinical Investigation: This degree is offered by a consortium of New York medical centers that have come together to operate the Cornell University Clinical and Translational Science Center. The degree provides training in clinical research that is designed to focus on specific biological questions.
  3. Masters in Biomedical Sciences: Eastern Virginia Medical School offers this degree which is essentially a curriculum of preliminary medical school courses taught by medical school faculty. The program provides an opportunity for the student to develop basic medical training, prepare for medical school, and prove his or her personal ability to manage a medical curriculum.
  4. Masters in Genetic Counseling: This relatively new medical field trains professionals for the purpose of counseling patients or relatives who are at risk of developing an inherited medical disorder. Professionals practice in hospitals and medical clinics primarily, using the competencies as defined by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
  5. Masters in Communications Science and Disorders: This is a speech pathology and audiology degree offered by, among others, Loma Linda University in California. Speech pathologists can work in medical clinics or establish their own practices, working with several medical centers.
  6. Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics: A degree in dietetics generally leads to status as a Registered Dietitian; most states have licensing requirements in the professional nutritional field. Illinois State University offers both an undergraduate and a Masters of Science program in the field.
  7. Masters in Nursing (MSN) is a degree that covers many nursing specialties, some of which are listed under different titles on this page. The basic degree is for management or teaching; Indiana University School of Nursing offers the MSN with certificates available both for teaching and for nurse informatics.
  8. MSN - Clinical Nurse Specialist: This graduate program in nursing prepares an RN with a baccalaureate to become an advanced practice nurse with specialized clinical skills. Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing has a comprehensive program for clinical nurse specialists and affiliated career focal points.
  9. MSN - Family Nurse Practitioner: There are also specializations for advanced practice nurse practitioners in pediatrics and gerontology, and in mental health, and women's health. The University of Missouri School of Nursing offers this program in part because of the need for rural health practitioners in the state.
  10. MSN - Nurse Anesthesiologist is one of the four principal advanced practice nurse training options within the MSN academic field. It is also the most lucrative of the lot, with an average annual salary of over $100,000. Drexel University has a twenty seven month program in this field for entering students, who must be an RN holding a BSN.
  11. Masters in Exercise Physiology: Some graduates in this field gravitate to organized sports, working as locker room and sideline trainers. Kent State University offers both a masters and a doctorate in this field, which includes the study of health and nutrition and the physiology of ageing as many professionals in the field are finding themselves working with the growing population of elderly.
  12. MSN - Nurse Midwifery: This field is closely related to the nurse practitioner - women's health specialist, but the academic track is different as is the degree and the breadth of medical responsibilities that fall into the profession. Old Dominion's MSN-Nurse Midwife degree program is a two year commitment that can be fulfilled at Old Dominion, at various distance sites and at Shenandoah University.
  13. Masters in Respiratory Therapy: Most respiratory therapists obtain licensure and enter practice with a bachelor's degree. The masters program at Georgia State University prepares graduates for advanced practice therapy and qualifies them to teach in the field.
  14. Masters in Physician Assistant (PA): There are a number of degree designations for this profession. The George Washington University PA Program offers a two year track that leads to a Masters of Science in Health Science (MSHS - PA) and a three year option that results in a combined MSHS and a Masters of Public Health, which is designated as a PA/MPH degree.
  15. Masters in Clinical Research Administration: The concept behind this course of study is oversight of clinical research protocols. The skills acquired in this program would most likely be applied in administering pharmaceutical clinical tests, which require a lot of regulatory work over and above administering drugs and placebos.
  16. Masters in Occupational Therapy (MOT): Practitioners in this field can specialize in pediatrics, in gerontology, in "low vision," which means working with patients who are sight impaired, and in psychology. Tufts University Occupational Therapy Department offers an entry level Masters Degree and a Post-Professional Masters program for further specialization.
  17. Masters in Physical Therapy (MPT) is the degree necessary for licensure as a physical therapist in all 50 states. Some programs such as offered at California State University at Long Beach focus more closely on clinical work, which is often treated as the entry level option in the field. Later therapists often move into private practice.
  18. Masters of Health Science (MHS) in Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound (DMU): This profession has moved from a certification program to a bachelors degree to now, the first and only Masters in DMU which is offered by the University of Missouri. The list of schools offering this degree will expand however, as the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool is expanding because of the fact that sound waves don't pose the danger found with the use of radiology and CT scans.
  19. Masters in Biophysical Sciences (MBS): At the University of Minnesota, in this course of study, "Students concentrate in research areas such as molecular biophysics, medical imaging, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, radiobiology, radiation therapy physics, and mathematical biophysics and computation." It is graduate level study of the science of diagnostics in the non-pathology technologies currently in use.
  20. Masters in Clinical Laboratory Science: Students who pursue this degree are often lab technicians that want to enhance their skills in clinical laboratory science disciplines, including, laboratory operations, microbiology, and such specialties as immunohematology. Graduates from the University of Alabama program will be eligible for the national exam offered by the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel.
  21. Masters in Clinical Laboratory Management: This is an academic track offered by Rush University and other schools that layers a set of management skills onto the basic graduate program in clinical laboratory science.
  22. Masters in Cytotechnology: This is a specialized field that trains the student in detailed medical cellular study for diagnostic purposes. Most workers in cytotechnology labs hold a bachelors degree; according to the American Society for Cytotechnology a Masters Degree allows for certification as a Specialist in Cytotechnology and qualifies the recipient for a management position.
  23. Masters in Dental Hygiene: The University of Maryland offers this program for students in the dental hygiene field who want to assume a leadership role in the field. The increasing need for geriatric services and large clinical applications has created a need for management skills in the industry.
  24. Masters in Medical Dosimetry: Professionals with a Bachelors in Radiologic Technology or a related degree can pursue this graduate course of study which specializes in the analysis of radiation dosage for therapeutic purposes. The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center offers this program through its College of Allied Health.Masters in Ophthalmic Technology: This graduate program trains the student to provide supporting services to a Doctor of Ophthalmology, and to perform many of the medical functions involved in patient visits and diagnosis. Emory University School of Medicine offers this degree program.
