Masters in Engineering Management Program Rankings

Masters in Engineering Management Program Rankings

The Master's in Engineering Management degree is something of a hybrid. Some universities have no such degree in the school of engineering, but offer an MBA specialization in the field. Others suggest a dual degree including an MBA and Master of Engineering in order to achieve engineering management status. And some universities approach engineering management as leadership role derived from years of experience in a particular engineering discipline. The list of schools we present here are drawn from the engineering school rankings published by US News & World Report in the annual survey of U.S. colleges, universities and graduate schools. From those rankings we have chosen schools with engineering management programs that incorporate the most important educational components associated with project management and the necessary advanced level training in engineering principles and theory.

1. Carnegie Mellon University offers a one year, interdisciplinary Masters in Engineering & Technology Innovation Management. This degree is an option for working engineers who would like to obtain advanced training in the technology that is driving changes in virtually all the engineering fields. This degree is also offered as a dual degree option, to be combined with a master's program in one of the traditional engineering disciplines. The dual degree can be completed in two years of full time work. The semesters are split between the two degrees, with the first semester devoted to the engineering degree, the second to the engineering management program, and so forth.

2. University of Michigan/Dearborn has a Master of Engineering Management degree program that is open to applicants who have a baccalaureate in engineering or in math, computer science or a physical science-coupled with at least five years' experience in an engineering field. The program requires thirty one credit hours of class work; in addition there is a thesis option that is awarded five credits. Students who chose the non-thesis option may complete a final report that is worth two credits and add additional electives to reach the thirty six credit requirement for the entire program.

3. University of Texas/Austin offers a two year Master of Engineering Management degree as part of the Lifelong Engineering Education program maintained by the School of Engineering. The degree is designed for working engineers who wish to continue working; classes are held one weekend a month, from 8 AM to 5 PM on Friday and Saturday. The curriculum focuses on several classic business management issues including technical and human performance oversight designed to achieve corporate goals. Additional courses address economics, negotiations, marketing, and decision analysis and risk assessment.

4. University of Southern California has a Master of Science in Engineering Management degree that is offered as either a campus or online program. The degree is oriented to management of technology projects but included in those management functions, the oversight of a project team and the engineering functions that go into successful project management. Admission requirements include an undergraduate degree in engineering that included coursework in engineering economics. The school also strongly suggests familiarity with engineering probability and statistics. Specialization tracks include Construction Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Information Systems, Manufacturing, Software Engineering, and Systems Engineering.

5. Purdue University offers a Master of Science in Engineering with specialization in Engineering Management & Leadership. The degree is open to students who have completed an undergraduate degree in engineering or in math, physics or computer science. The program is available as an online option for working engineers who wish to continue working while pursuing the degree. There is also a dual degree option that combines the Purdue program with a Certificate in Global Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.
