July 9th, 2010

Students pursuing a Master’s in Ethnic Studies degree often have a varied load of classes. Most students specialize in one particular ethnic group and concentrate their class work around that culture and country. For example, if someone was concentrating on Latin American studies, they would study the history, society, culture, and economics of countries located throughout Latin America. Many of these graduates go on to work in positions scattered throughout academia, private industry, and government. Some go to work for private institutes that focus on improving circumstances in certain areas of the world. Some continue with their education and pursue a PhD.

One of the questions for those that want to obtain a degree online is whether that degree is the same as what they would get with a traditional university. As long as the college holds proper accreditation, the degree you get holds the same power and prestige as one you would get by going to college in classroom. For those that want to pursue Ethnic Studies Master’s Programs, they find they can enter the world after finishing their degree with the confidence as those that went to traditional university. The largest difference is that it usually costs less and did not disrupt their lives as much.

Job prospects for graduates vary greatly depending on what form of position they are looking for. Some end up teaching high school level social studies. Many of those end up making anywhere from $25,000 a year to $30,000 a year just out of school. Of course, that depends on the school district where they find a job. Others end up working with private organizations that pursue improvements in various parts of society. Those jobs come with a large span of potential starting salaries. Jobs within the nonprofit sector usually have lower salaries.

  • Which university offers the best opportunities for entering a competitive graduate school, UCLA or Berkeley? I cant say which is most competitive statistically, but I would tell you to pick the school which you feel you can do the best at. Whichever school that you feel you have the best chance of getting to know your professors, and working in a lab or doing research. Those things are most likely to get you to a good grad school. Also check out the professors in each department you will be taking classes from and working with, and look at their vita. See what they have published, what they are researching etc, and see if that is something you are interested in and could get involved in. It really depends all on your interests and how well you click with the program, because grad schools will look at what you accomplished at your school of choice, not what the school accomplishes on its own. Pick wherever it is that you will be able to stand out.
