Masters in Health Care Administration Salaries

The MHA is another degree that can land a graduate in a variety of business environments and settings.  There are some positions available in the insurance sector, for professionals interested in case management or regulatory compliance management for third party payors.  There is a multitude of administrative opportunities in healthcare systems and managed care services; there are jobs with service agencies, contractors, and increasingly with companies that are operating extended care facilities designed around various models.  A MHA can also lead to many types of work in the public sector at the state, local and national level.  Several federal agencies engage in extensive healthcare research, some are responsible for billions of dollars of annual funding oversight, and there are huge bureaucracies built into the Medicare and Medicaid systems.  Virtually every county in every state has some sort of public health administrative responsibility, as do many large American cities.

  1. Hospital Administrator: This is the oldest healthcare administration position, a job that led directly to the development of the MHA degree during the latter half of the twentieth century.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics the median salary for this position is $96,660.  In the larger hospitals and teaching centers, the salary is substantially higher.
  2. Outpatient Clinic Director: This position is somewhat difficult to gauge as the salary figures for private clinics and for public health facilities, which can be very large, are not available in any sort of combined format.  The outpatient clinic positions in the private sector have a median wage of $84,980 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  These positions can be a mid-level management role in a major healthcare system center and a stepping stone to a more senior position.
  3. Managed Care Director: This is essentially a contract development, management and oversight position for firms that hire outside specialty contractors for medical services.  A company that operates multiple home health care agencies would have someone in charge of contracting for services on a local basis.  The salary range for this position according to Payscale.com is $78,387 – $124,310. The median salary is $102,810.
  4. Rehabilitation Services Director: Work in this profession can be in a hospital setting, a home health care agency, or a long term care facility.  Depending upon the nature of the employer it can be a mid-level or a senior position.  According to Payscale.com, the salary range for this position in a hospital is $73,282 – $94,791.  The median salary is $83,760.  For work in a home health care agency the job pays $74,258 – $96,459, with a median salary of $85,400.
  5. Public Health Director: This job description can refer to a senior research position or an administrative role in the public sector.  The primary profession associated with it is management of county or city public health services.  According to Payscale.com the salary range for this position is $60,000 – $123,465, a range that reflects the disparity among small rural county services and large urban areas.  The median salary is $91,750.
