Masters in History

Although it's possible to receive a general Masters in History degree, most students who are studying history at this advanced level will focus in one particular time period or region of the world. This coursework will then cover the cultural, scientific, and other factors that helped shape what happened in time. Strong research skills are necessary for the completion of this type of program, as much of the job of a historian is analyzing documents and other historical artifacts of a period in time. Teaching skills, a strong writing foundation, and foreign languages may also all be put into play.

Students who have been considering going back to school for a history degree or continuing the initial work of their undergraduate research may want to look into online History Master's Programs. These can be completed on the student's own time, so even those with the busiest schedules could be working part-time on their studies as well. It's recommended to research the differences in these various online degree programs, in terms of academic reputation. This is especially true for those who want to go on to obtain a PhD in this academic area at some point, in which case you will need to have a Master's degree from a reliable source.

Most graduates of a history master's program will go on to find work in the educational sphere, teaching either at a high school or college level. It's also possible to find employment as a research specialist, or within government agencies that are concerned with preserving culture or teaching about a particular aspect of history. The salary will vary widely according to where a historian manages to find employment, but generally will fall within a range for professors of $74,872 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
