Masters in Human Resources

Those that pursue a Master's in Human Resources take classes surrounding how to manage human capital in organizations as well as providing services to smaller groups and individuals. They take classes surrounding human resource dynamics, labor relations, civil rights, human relations law, motivation, work systems, career management, employee testing, recruitment, managing employees, and training. Many students that enter this master's degree program come from human resource departments in various industries and government agencies. They learn to take their skills and apply them on larger scales using real-world cases. Many that graduate with this degree go on to become human resource managers.

Many potential students dream of being able to get a masters degree yet their everyday lives prevent them from taking this large step. These students are under the impression that they would have to attend classes on a traditional university campus. For people that have is the professional and personal lives, this can be difficult. That is one reason why getting your degree online is attractive to so many people. Human Resources Master's Programs are available through online universities. Students that graduate with a degree from an online university have the same opportunities as those from traditional universities.

Students that graduate with a human resources degree go on to become human resource managers, directors, and coordinators. They work in a variety of industries as well as government agencies. Many obtain this degree while already working in the human resources area. Those that want to go into teaching will often go on to get a PhD as well. For those that obtain a job as a human resources manager, they can expect to make upwards of $45,000 a year. Many companies offer bonuses as well as profit sharing for these managers. In those cases, the amount can be much higher.

Human Resource Grad Resources

Temple University offers the Master of Human Resources Management as a special graduate level program through the Fox School of Business. The degree is available on a part time basis and is offered as an evening program with classes beginning after 4:30 PM. It is designed for the working professional who needs to continue academic development in order to continue career advancement.

George Washington University has a Master of Human Resource Development program that focuses on organizational development, organizational change, and leadership in those environments. The degree is offered as a full time or part time option; with daytime or with evening classes; and at three locations - two in Northern Virginia and one at the Washington DC campus.

Hofstra University has a Master of Human Resource Management program offered through the Management, Entrepreneurship & General Business Department of the School of Business. The management program has several master's degree options in various facets of business administration, and HR is one of them. It is a standard professional master's degree that can be completed in eighteen months to two years.

George Mason University offers the Master of Human Resources degree as an option in the Master of Public Administration program. This area of concentration will provide the student with training necessary for personnel management in the public sector, which is easily applicable to the corporate environment today.

Golden Gate University has a Master of Human Resource Management as a thirty three credit hour program available on the San Francisco campus or as an online option for professionals who need to earn their degree while on the move. There is substantial concentration on organizational development and change management in this program, both essential elements in HR management today.

Human Resources Professional Associations

Society for Human Resource Management offers a wealth of information on the various areas for HR management specialization: benefits, consulting, organizational development, technology, diversity, compensation, employee relations, and staffing management. There are several publications, a research library, education resources, and a job bank.

Academy of Human Resource Development was founded in 1993 to contribute to research and dissemination of research information on human resource development. The Academy sponsors three conferences per year, in the Americas, in Europe, and in Asia. There are also four journals put out by the Academy and offers scholarly information through webcasts.

American Society for Training and Development has over 130 chapters in the United States and an additional thirty affiliated organizations worldwide. It is the largest organization in the world for professionals in the workplace learning and performance field. Many people in this field work in HR departments within a corporate structure, but many more are employed in consulting firms that specialize in organizational development.

International Public Management Association for Human Resources represents human resource professionals at the federal, state, and local government level. The organization is focused in public sector personnel practices, which differ significantly from the business environment. There is an active professional development component offering seminars, classes and publications.

National Human Resources Association was established in 1951 as the first national organization for human resource professionals. Today the Association offers networking and professional education for its members, with several useful tools for business connections. There are also research materials, surveys, and news resources available to members on the website.

Human Resources Accreditation

Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the organization for accreditation of business schools, which at many universities offer the Master of Human Resources degree or offer HR as a MBA specialization option. AACSB also accredits degree programs in management.

Human Resources Certification Institute has certified over 108,000 professionals in the field. Their exam based credentialing process is available for three classifications: the Professional in Human Resources (PHR), the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), and the Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR).

National Public Employer Labor Relations Association has a labor relations academy program for professionals in the field. Completion of the program leads to recognition as a Certified Labor Relations Professional (CLRP). It is a three course program that requires a professional paper for conclusion.

Human Resources Policy Association is an organization for human resources management officials. The Association offers its own educational program in labor relations that leads to a Labor Relations Professional Certification. This program focuses on grievance procedures and management of union contracts and negotiations.

WorldatWork Society of Certified Professionals is an organization that offers certification in several human resources fields. There is an education program followed by an exam that can lead to any one of the following: Certified Compensation Professional, Certified Benefits Professional, Global Remuneration Professional, Certified Sales Compensation Professional, and Certified Executive Compensation Professional.
