Masters in Nursing Program Rankings

The finest nursing schools in the country are generally located in or nearby major medical centers that are either operated by or associated with the university.  Most of the large medical schools have treatment and research health systems centers that are part of the graduate education programs in medicine.  MSN degrees in clinical practice require extensive practicum hours, so the programs with sophisticated or advanced areas of specialization are usually based in highly evolved medical centers.  Some of the oncology and cardiovascular MSN training programs are in renowned medical research and treatment centers.  There are also some programs in neurological nursing that can only be found in a few medical centers where neurological treatment has become a specialty along with medical teaching in the field. Find Masters in Nursing Online today.

  1. University of Washington has held the #1 ranking among nursing schools in the U.S. since 1984.  The structure for graduate level nursing academics is slightly different than at most schools.  UW offers a Master of Nursing degree for most of what are thought of as MSN specialties.  The MN options at Washington include Adult Nurse Practitioner, Community Health Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric NP, Psychiatric/Mental Health NP, Nurse Midwifery, and several other specialties.  The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is also available for several of the nurse practitioner specializations.  The Master of Science in Nursing is an academic degree meant to lead to a PhD program.
  2. University of California/San Francisco has a large and sophisticated medical treatment and training center.  The MSN program located there offers the RN to MSN option for nurses with an ADN degree and another bridge option for nurses holding a baccalaureate in an unrelated field.  The specialization options for the MSN degree at UCSF include Nurse Practitioner options in Adult Nursing, Psychiatric/Mental Health, Acute Care, Family Nursing, Midwifery/Women’s Health, Pediatric, Neonatal, and Pediatric Acute Care.  Among the clinical nurse specialist options are Cardiovascular, Trauma/Acute Care, Community Health, Gerontology, Health Policy, Oncology, and Perinatal Nursing.
  3. Johns Hopkins University offers a MSN program that ranges from 36 to 67 credits for completion, over eighteen to twenty four months.  There are also several online options for the degree.  On campus, the specializations include Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Midwifery/Women’s Health, Clinical Nurse Specialist/Health Systems Management, and the MSN in Health Systems Management which is available as an on campus or online option.  Nurse Practitioner options include Acute/Critical Care, Adult, Family, Pediatric, and Public Health Nursing.
  4. University of Maryland offers a new area of specialization called Clinical Nurse Leader as part of the MSN program.  Other options for areas of concentration include Nurse Practitioner options in Gerontology, Adult Practice, two specializations in Pediatric NP, and Family NP.  There are MSN specializations in Community/Public Health Nursing, Health Services Leadership & Management, Nursing Informatics, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, and Nurse Anesthetist.  There is also a blended Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Practitioner program in Trauma/Critical Care & Emergency Room Nursing.  There is a RN to MSN Bridge program available as well.
  5. University of Michigan has an impressive MSN program divided into four professional groups.  The Acute, Critical Care & Long Term Care programs include Acute Care training for NP and Clinical Nurse Specialists, Gerontology, and Psychiatric – Mental Health Care.  The Health Promotion/Risk Reduction/Community Health specializations include Community & Home Health Nursing, Occupational Health, Adult Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner.  In the Parent-Child Nursing area there are programs for Pediatric NP and Nurse Midwife. And in the Nursing Business & Health Systems sector there are MSN degrees offered in Nursing Business & Health Systems and several dual degrees – with the MBA, MHA, and Master of Systems Information for specialization in Health Informatics.
