Masters in Occupational Therapy

To become an occupational therapist, it is now required by the government that one must hold a Masters in Occupational Therapy. A Bachelor’s degree lays the foundation for the advanced knowledge and skill set that are necessary to excel in this field. Coursework will include topics such as learning disabilities, mental health services, physical rehabilitation services, care management programs, and other organizational and managerial skills. This is then combined with an internship or research program, to heighten and refine skills and give some level of experience to students before stepping out into the occupational workforce.

There are a number of benefits to considering online Occupational Therapy Master’s Programs, including the fact that it is far more convenient for many and can be worked into any preexisting schedule. Although in the past it was difficult to give the type of technical support and academic research capabilities that are necessary for success through an online degree alone, with advances in technology this is now just as viable as a traditional classroom setting. Students can still interact with peers and receive individualized attention from qualified professors, yet do this at a fraction of the price and on their own time.

The job prospects for graduates of this program are excellent, as the health care industry in general is one of the steadiest arenas in which to find work at the moment. Hospitals are the most common employers of occupational therapists, but graduates may also find work in locations ranging from home health care centers to schools. Government and private agencies are also often in need of experts in this field. The salary will depend on the work environment one is placed in, along with experience, but averages at $54,660 per year according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
