Masters in Project Management Requirements

Master of Project Management Requirements

The Master of Project Management degree can be one of many academic options because there are several academic disciplines that offer project management programs. Information technology project management is one of the predominant options for this profession, and it can translate into many sorts of projects. Software development programs have project managers, as do network design projects and database merger efforts and dozens of other IT functions that require a management perspective and a knowledgeable IT professional.

Most MBA programs that offer more than a handful of specializations include project management as one of the "majors" for the degree. While the core of any MBA curriculum is going to be management, accounting and finance training, part of business administration at the senior level can be project management. Many Master of Management programs offer areas of specialization, one of which is usually project management. This degree is considered an alternative to the MBA, with more focus on management theory and practice; less focus on the nuts and bolts of business. And there are also project management roles in clinical research, most of which require a medical background and are highly specialized.

IT Masters of Project Management Requirements

Generally this degree is a thirty to thirty six credit hour program that can be completed in fifteen to eighteen months or in some cases, one full year of study. The core courses aren't going to focus on IT basics much, those you need to bring with you. Basic programming languages and a good understanding of software design are going to be important. Core courses will probably focus on technology management, personnel management in a technology environment, and the strategy of project management along with the financial tools used for project planning and oversight. The essentials of project implantation include risk analysis, which is another lesson in finance. Other classes may focus on procurement and supply chain management, testing and quality management, and the communications skills needed to manage a team.

MBA Project Management Requirements

A full time MBA is usually designed as a two year, full time course of study. Forty to forty four credit hour curricula are not unusual, with a little over half the course requirements devoted to the core classes providing the essentials of business administration. Typically these foundation courses include accounting, finance, computer applications and systems management for business, operations analysis, marketing management, perhaps a course in HR management, and other business basics. The second year of the program focuses on advanced business classes such as financial management and on the area of specialization - in this instance, project management.

The concentration courses for project management will include perhaps six electives and a final capstone project. The classes that focus on this profession may include more financial courses because success in the project management field is often keyed to meeting a budget. Financial reporting & analysis, organizational behavior, managerial economics, and operations management are typical project management classes in a MBA program.

Masters in Management Project Management Requirements

Most of these degree programs are in the 36 to 40 credit hour range, with half or a little over half of these credits associated with specialization classes in the field of project management. The core courses for a graduate degree in management usually include both finance and statistics for managers, communications with a culturally diverse workforce, and organizational theory. The segment of the curriculum devoted to the study of project management include quality control, risk management, procurement, strategic financial managing, and usually a capstone course that results in a report of some sort.
