Masters in Social Work Salaries

Master of Social Work Salaries

People who decide to undertake the rigorous academic exercise associated with a MSW degree are doing so out of compassion or some similar altruistic sentiment, because the jobs in social work do not pay commensurate with the education that is required. Even in cities and counties where government employees have enjoyed a decent wage, the social services have always lagged behind. Those MSW graduates that worked their way into a management role in an agency or organization might be the exception, but for most mid-level positions the salaries are modest. Licensed clinical social workers, and certified clinical social workers do a little better than most.

Medical and Public Health Social Worker are MSW graduates who specialized in health services or who gravitated to public health - which becomes a larger social services issue every year. According to Payscale.com the salary range for healthcare social workers employed in hospitals is $41,064 - $56,779, with a median salary of $48,600. Those working in Community Mental Health have a salary range of $36,443 - $50,033 with a median salary of $44,350.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker is in a position to demand a little more pay because of the clinical license. The salary range for this position is $44,597 - $67,363 with a median salary of $56,200. There is also a certification available for this title which can inflate the salary range a little. Clinical social workers are the individuals who have been granted a counseling license by the state.

School Social Worker positions seem to pay a little better than the prevailing wage scales for MSW graduates working in medical or clinical settings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the median wage for school social workers in 2009 was $53,860 - for those who were employed by elementary or secondary schools, as opposed to being detailed to a school assignment by another agency.

Substance Abuse Social Worker positions have a very modest pay range according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: for 2009 the salary range was $30,480 - $62,760 with a median salary of $46,440. Some addiction counseling positions are licensed at lower educational levels than the MSW positions however, which may be reflected in this salary range.

Social Service Agency Coordinator is a catchall term for a middle management MSW professional working for local government. The salary range in the municipal or county environment is a little more respectable, with a median salary of $51,700 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In most states social services are managed by county jurisdictions for the most part, although major cities like New York and Chicago have their own network of social service agencies.
