Masters in Software Engineering Schools

Masters in Software Engineering Schools

For years software engineering was an adjunct of computer science. In many universities the software engineering program is still found within the computer science department, but today software engineering has the status of a degree in some cases rather than an afterthought in a computer science curriculum. That said it's still not easy to find a master's in software engineering. There are many undergraduate programs but the selection of graduate degree programs for this field remains limited.

Our collection of schools listed below have software engineering programs that are clearly established, or else have computer science/electronic engineering departments that have a comprehensive selection of graduate degree programs from which an education in software engineering can be obtained. Software engineering is an example of a field where the titles for collegiate degrees vary widely from institution to institution, leading to confusion among employers and somewhat nebulous standards for curricula. The schools listed here have managed to produce clear cut, quality graduate programs in software engineering.

1. Walden University offers a Masters in Software Engineering (MSE) that is designed for people who already have some experience in IT or in software development and see the value of an advanced degree. It is one of the few MSE programs that offers specialization: a candidate for this degree at Walden can opt to focus on design, project management, quality & testing or management as a "major" for their graduate curriculum. This program is available online.

2. Regis University also makes the Master of Science in Software Engineering available at its seven Colorado campuses, its Las Vegas campus and online. The course of study is delivered in eight week modules so that students can begin the program at virtually any time of the year. Classroom courses are conducted in the evening.

3. University of Maryland University College is an accredited online university in the country today developed by a traditional institution of higher learning. UMUC offers many of the University's graduate programs online and one of them is the Master of Information Technology with specialization in Software Engineering. One of the more interesting additions to the curriculum is a course in Economics & Financial Analysis for Technology Managers, which amounts to training in risk assessment for software engineers engaged in a major upgrade or change-out project.

4. University of Liverpool delivers its online Master of Science in Software Engineering in class module format. Those topics include computer structures, professional issues, software engineering, systems analysis and design, IT project management, QA and testing, and either Java programming or programming the internet. Students from several nations participate in this program so you will be free to communicate with colleagues around the globe.
