Health informatics is a booming industry at the moment, as is the entire world of health care. Students are interested in the health care industry but wish to learn more about the technological and organizational side of it would do well to look into the Master of Science in Health Informatics as a possible graduate degree. These are the programs as ranked by US News and World Report, which takes the MSHI as its own program that is very different from healthcare administration.

  • University of Illinois at Chicago has the benefit of being available online, for maximum convenience for students. In this program, students have the ability to learn more about how to implement and analyze various health care information technologies. These can then be applied to a number of various health care environments, both large and small. This could lead to employment as upper level management in the health care industry after graduation, or could be a jumping off point for future studies.
  • Brandeis University offers a Master of Science in Health and Medical Informatics, which covers a wide variety of topics that may be pertinent to the changing world of healthcare and technical systems. That includes computer and information sciences, management techniques, and how to distill this information and apply it to health care systems in the most logical and useful way. Internships help round out the classroom information, and can be a good way to help ensure job placement after graduation.
  • University of Maryland helps mid-career professionals who already may have some administrative or health care experience, with their MS in Health Administration Informatics degree. Students who are interested in taking this knowledge and advancing it to a more specific field of study may wish to go for an MS in bioinformatics, or information technology. This program can be achieved in as little as one year on a part-time basis, with evening and distance learning options also available.
  • Northeastern University has a degree program leading to an MBA in healthcare management or MS in Health Administration Informatics. This is meant to be for those students who already have a firm healthcare background, but wish to supplement this with business and managerial courses. An emphasis on technology as it is used in business can also help prepare students for the real world.
  • University of Missouri offers a program that is designed for those professionals working in the healthcare industry who are interested in adding technical and managerial elements to their current level of knowledge. There is a dual degree option that is available, for a stronger information technology element to the program overall. This can help stretch current skills and ensure that students are able to become health informatics professionals on a convenient, part-time basis.
  • Ashford University puts a premium on leadership ability within its highly individualized online course that leads to an MS in Heath Informatics. There are only 33 credit hours that are necessary to complete this advanced level course, so it's mainly geared to those who already have a firm knowledge of the health care industry. They also offer a separate MS in Information Systems for those who want more of the technological element to their studies.
  • Creighton University helps to prepare IT professionals for work in the healthcare environment. To be successful in this thriving industry, it's a good idea to have a MS in healthcare information technology management, which is currently offered online by Creighton.
  • Northwestern University offers a 13-unit MS in Medical Informatics program that is geared towards two different types of backgrounds. Students with a background in either health care or information technology may be able to better round out their knowledge with this skill set learned in this program.
  • Walden University gives professionals in the IT or health care fields the chance to further their skills and knowledge with their MS degree. For those with no background in the health care field, there are also programs offered by Walden such as the RN-MSN pathway to help give a foundation in this area.
