Oregon Graduate Engineering Schools with Master's & PhD Degree Programs

Oregon Health and Sciences University Department of Science and Engineering

One of the top ranked health universities in the nation, OHSU also features a popular Science and Engineering Department, ranked consistently in the top 5% of schools by US News and World Report. A location in Portland, with extensive research and laboratory facilities, helps make this a prime location for graduate school. There are three different divisions, including Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Computer Science, and Environmental and Biomolecular Systems.

Master's of Science in Biomedical Engineering

Students whose ultimate goal is to work within such prestigious organizations as governmental laboratories, academic institutions, or in the biomedical industry may wish to pursue this highly specialized degree. Some of the required courses include Biomedical Engineering Seminar, The Practice and Ethics of Science, and Probability and Statistics for Scientists and Engineers. After this, a research or thesis project is also required, as well as several credits in elective courses to help round out the student's personal interests and focus his or her field of study.

PhD in Electrical Engineering

Those who elect to pursue this advanced degree will need to form a faculty mentor committee consisting of three mentors, who will help with the schooling throughout the research and study period in the pursuit of this degree. There is a heavy component on Systems Engineering, and students will need to understand computer systems as well as electrical currents in order to fulfill all the academic requirements that are part of this program.

Oregon State University College of Engineering

Located south of Portland in the college town of Corvallis, OSU is one of the premiere state schools. Students benefit from the superb academic reputation of the staff here, and the high number of technology companies in the area. These help provide internships for many, leading to employment after gaining a graduate degree from the School of Engineering. Some of the study possibilities include but are not limited to Biological and Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

Master's in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

A thesis project is no longer required for the completion of a Master's in this field, but there are some very specific program requirements. These core courses will change annually, but could include such fields of study as computers systems analysis and applied mathematics. Students may be eligible to work either as interns or as teaching assistants to help round out their studies and get experience.

PhD in Computer Science

Computer technologies and all their intricacies are at the heart of this highly focused program, which lets students work directly with some of the local leaders in the field of software design and computer systems analysis. This can then lead to a career in teaching, computer network design, or even electrical engineering, depending on the student's interests.
