The concept behind occupational therapy is providing assistance to the patient to develop skill sets leading to a purposeful or meaningful occupation. In a medical context that can mean working with an elderly patient who has suffered a stroke to relearn personal care habits. It can also mean working with children who are developmentally disabled on their fine motor skills and basic physical abilities that will allow them to get into the development mainstream.
