Grand Canyon University was established in 1949 as a small Christian liberal arts school in Phoenix, AZ. Established by members of the Baptist community who wanted a school for higher education affiliated with their faith in what was then a remote location, the school continued its march as a small sectarian institution until 2004, when it was sold to an organization that put it under the umbrella of Grand Canyon Education and converted into a for-profit campus and online institution, while retaining the Christian nature of the campus environment. Since its acquisition Grand Canyon has quickly moved into the front tier of for-profit institutions based on its online growth and the quality of its educational offerings.
Grand Canyon teamed with a high profile entrepreneur to create the Ken Blanchard School of Business for its online and on campus MBA program. The School of Education and the School of Nursing were established or upgraded to accreditation status, as well as being extended into online assets for the University. Despite ownership by an educational corporation the campus remains an active and increasingly popular option for students looking for a small liberal arts school in the area. There has been substantial investment in the campus facilities since the University was sold, including a $60 million expansion project that incorporates a 500 bed dormitory and a 5,000 seat exhibition center to be used for concerts, other large events, and games for the University’s basketball teams.
The academic integrity of the campus remains intact as well. It is one of the few schools affiliated with a for-profit online venture that has a fine arts program, with degree programs in music education, theater and drama, and digital film production. The College of Health Sciences, separate from the School of Nursing, offers a pre-medical degree and a pre-physician assistant program, one of the few undergraduate degrees in the country designed for aspiring physician assistants.
