The University of Southern California is an excellent private university with a 130 year history located in Los Angles California. For many years USC was known more for its prowess in NCAA football than its academic excellence; that is no longer the case. USC is a major medical training and research center, using Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles as its primary teaching facility but with medical teaching and research locations at several sites in Southern California. The University is also noted for its School of Engineering which has an uncommonly wide range of engineering academic tracks available, many of which are offered online today. USC operates a respected School of Cinematic Arts that provides education in television and film production, with more than 10,000 alumni working in the industry today. Notable graduates include George Lucas, Ron Howard, and hundreds of successful directors, producers, cinematographers, writers, editors, and visual effects wizards.
USC Rankings & Accreditation
One of the measures of a quality research and upper echelon academic facility is the ration of graduate students to undergraduates. At USC the current student population consists of about 17,500 undergraduates and over 19,000 graduate and professional students. Taken together these groups comprise one of the largest private university populations in the nation. There are nearly 7,000 international students enrolled. The sponsored research budget at USC exceeded $560 million in 2010, ranking it among the top universities, public or private, in funded academic research.
USC has been proactive in expanding its physical education space, opening centers in Orange County and Sacramento, CA that offer graduate programs in business, social work, education, public policy, health administration, and public administration. There is an Environmental Sciences program based on Catalina Island off the California coast. In addition to the establishment of educational satellite sites in California and overseas, USC has been active in developing online education options that have proven to be a successful expansion for several of the University departments.
