Walden University:
Walden was established in 1970 as a school to confer graduate degrees on students who were maintaining jobs. The initial campus was in Florida and the initial degrees were 46 PhDs and 24 EdDs awarded to teachers and other education professionals. In 1979 the State of Minnesota granted Walden permission to award PhD and EdD degrees in that state and the school moved its headquarters to Minneapolis. In 1990 the University received full accreditation from the Higher Education Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1995 Walden offered its first online degree, a Master of Educational Change & Technology Innovation, and the move into online education was underway.
In 2002 the University was acquired in full by Laureate Education, which has developed Walden into the respected online institution it is today. There are five colleges within the University: the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, the College of Health Sciences, the College of Management & Technology, the College of Education & Leadership, and the College of Undergraduate studies. Walden remains focused on graduate level education and is probably the only online, for-profit institution that sponsors peer-reviewed and refereed academic journals. These publications are the Journal of Social Change, the Journal of Social, Behavioral & Health Sciences, and the International Journal of Applied Management & Technology.
