Master in Social Work:

This program is for students who are serious about their careers in social work. The program begins with a core education in which students learn about key issues in the field. Students learn about policies. They learn to analyze policy. They learn issues and challenges related to social policy. Students also learn about issues such as economic inequality and discrimination that is due to a number of different factors. Students also learn about how to work with a number of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Students choose an independent area of study and work closely with faculty advisors who direct them toward completion of independent projects. Students participate in fieldwork. This makes up the experiential part of the education. Students are given the opportunity to work within the communities they study. They also get to enhance their own independent research with this essential experience. The goal of the program is to teach students about contemporary challenges in today's social work profession. Students will gain an understanding of policy through in depth analysis. Students will also be able to apply their knowledge of policy to the real life situations they encounter during the fieldwork. This program is rigorous and demands absolute attention and dedication from students. Students complete the two year program with an advanced understanding of the social work field and of the challenges facing many undernourished and impoverished communities across the country. By the end of the program, students have completed a dissertation based on the research and experience gained through the program. Many students who complete this program find positions in a number of different public and private organizations and institutions. Students also find positions in government agencies at the federal, state, and city levels. The students take from this program an advanced understanding of theory and an ability to apply that theory to professional practice.
