This degree is for students who would like to pursue degrees in social work. The program begins with a core education. This means that students take classes in courses that teach current issues and problems facing those in the social work profession. Students learn about community and family building techniques and methods. They focus on discovering and solving problems of social injustice and economic inequality. There are two basic tracks for those pursing master degrees in social work. One track is to become involved in clinical social work. This track is for students who want to work with people on a one-on-one basis. This allows students to get involved in the community on a social level. The other track is the micro approach to social work. These students are concerned with the big picture. They study policy and law. These students look at larger trends of neighborhood and community development. This track requires much research and the practical application happens at the policy level. Students from both tracks study the core classes. They learn the most current research methods. They learn to read and analyze social data. They also study policy. Students choose their areas of concentration and work closely with faculty advisors who guide the students toward completion of the projects. Students perform field work. This is the experiential facet of the social work education. Students learn to apply theories and ideas attained in the classroom to the real world context. After completing the program, students are placed in a number of different positions in a number of different fields. Students work for community organizations, government agencies, and private organizations.
