Top Five Master of Homeland Security Programs Online

There are Master of Homeland Security degrees offered as online options by university criminal justice programs, management programs or in some cases as a MBA area of concentration. A few schools have created a standalone degree with this title, but all of them have been developed since 9/11 and the tendency has been to establish homeland security as a field within law enforcement or criminal justice administration or as some other form of security studies. There are several degree programs available in Cybersecurity or IT Security offered as homeland security options. Students can select a homeland security career track based on the university department or division that is offering the degree. There are job openings in the various agencies within the Department of Homeland Security for every type of law enforcement professional, IT security expert, computer forensics expert, and investigative professional.

1. Walden University has two degrees that provide focus for a homeland security career. The Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree offers specialization in Homeland Security Policy, or in Homeland Security Policy & Coordination. One is more a research and policy role, the other an administrative or management course of study. The other option is a Master of Science in Psychology with specialization in Terrorism & Security. Classes for this psychology specialization include Disaster, Crisis & Trauma, Terrorism: a Systemic Approach for Emergency Preparedness, and Critical Incident Planning & Leadership. Typical time for completion on these degrees is one and a half years.

2. St. Joseph's University of Philadelphia offers the Master of Science in Homeland Security with a curriculum that provides support for existing law enforcement and public safety officials who would like to move into this career specialty. Among the courses oriented to traditional public service positions are Police Executive Management, Fire Department Organization & Management, and Emergency Medical Services Management. The classes focused on homeland security include Critical Incident Stress Management, Terrorism: Threats & Strategies, Strategic Planning for the Public Safety Sector, Environmental Crime, and a seminar in Global Chemical Regulations and Compliance Management.

3. Kaplan University has an online degree in Master of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management that focuses on the legal, business, social, and environmental aspects of homeland security and crisis management. Basic courses in the core curriculum include Research Methodology, Leadership in the Public Sector, Crisis & Emergency Management Fundamentals, and Critical Legal Issues in Criminal Justice. The more focused, higher division courses in the program include Critical Issues in Terrorism, Specialized Criminal Statutes & Investigations, and Mitigation & Preparedness for Emergency Management.

4. American Military University offers accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees for a number of programs, many of which are oriented to returning military veterans, providing options for utilizing military training in civilian life. There is a Master of Arts in Homeland Security available as an online course of study from this school that focuses on homeland defense, intelligence and homeland security, terrorism, consequence management, and interagency government issues. The Master of Arts in Emergency & Disaster Management is a policy and planning oriented degree for work in the public sector. For either of these degrees military veterans should take a close look at transferring military training experience into college credits.

5. Utica College has two online degrees in the homeland security area. The Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration offers a Homeland Security & Emergency Management specialization. Coursework includes training in the FEMA National Incident Management System as well as local and regional initiatives for emergency management. There is also a Master of Science in Cybersecurity - Intelligence & Forensics that would be excellent training for working with a financial crimes unit in the FBI or ATF or some other agency engaged in the gathering of intelligence over the Internet.
