Top 5 Online Masters in Teaching Degree Programs

The Master of Arts in Education was created in response to the massive shortage of qualified public school teachers that has been a reality for twenty years. While it has lessened in scope during the last five years, teachers in the “STEM” categories (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) are still in short supply, particularly in inner city schools. There are two distinct types of MAT degrees: those for licensed, working teachers who hold a bachelor’s degree and would like to upgrade their teaching status as well as the educational credential. These programs provide training for teaching math, the sciences and other topics at the middle school and secondary education level. There are also programs for people who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than teaching and wish to make a career change into teaching.

  1. Walden University offers an accredited MAT program that is designed for students who are not currently teachers but want to be. Because Walden is based in Minnesota the school is fully accredited for those seeking a Minnesota teaching license. It is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Specialization options include Early Childhood Education (K - 3), Special Education for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (K - 12), and Special Education for Learning Disabilities.
  2. University of Southern California has launched an impressive online MAT program that includes a proactive administrative role in gaining student teacher opportunities for its students regardless of the state of residence. This program is fully accredited for a California state teaching license and by the NCATE. Aspiring teachers can specialize in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, or Multiple Subject Teaching. Working teachers have the same specialization options. The USC MAT program can be completed in one year of full time study or three years of part time work.
  3. University of Maryland University College offers an online MAT program designed specifically for qualification as a teacher in Maryland schools. There is an existing program for state license transfer that allows teachers to move from one state to another. The UMUC program is for students with no previous background in education and provides a wealth of specialization options. Students can select a teaching field from these areas: earth/space science, physics, English, mathematics, history, social studies, chemistry, biology, and computer science.
  4. Kaplan University has a MAT program for teacher certification in the state of Iowa, where the University is based. There is also a non-certification program that is, however, accredited by the NCATE and should be acceptable in other states as qualified academic preparation for a teaching license. Obtaining the student teaching hours if you are an out of state student will involve working out an arrangement with a local school or school district. The curriculum for this program is preparation for teaching in grades 5-12.
  5. Liberty University offers the online MAT degree with three areas of specialization. As with other accredited online MAT programs the curriculum meets the teacher licensing requirements for the University’s home state, Virginia. By virtue of the NCATE accreditation the curriculum is probably acceptable for teacher licensing in other states as well, but it is up to out of state students to confirm this by checking with the Department of Education in their state of residence. The areas of specialization for the Liberty MAT are in Special Education, Elementary Education and Secondary Education. There are also further curriculum choices for an educational area of competency such as English, Social Studies or Science.
