Five Online Masters in Forensics Programs

Five Online Forensics Programs

Forensics degrees can be found in a number of formats, ascribed to a variety of academic disciplines. There are graduate programs in forensics psychology, in criminal justice and forensics, in computer forensics, and in forensic science - which is essentially crime scene and crime lab investigation. Our collection of online programs includes forensics degrees with various academic titles, but the concept for all of them is the same. The term "forensics" in all of these career tracks means preparing information to be presented in a court of law. The use of computer technology to develop such techniques as DNA modeling and the financial tracking has added a high-tech spin to the concept, but the heart of the science remains the same: the development of accurate information that is reinforced by a knowledgeable presentation of evidence.

1. Walden University offers a Masters in Mental Health Counseling with specialization in Forensic Counseling. A career in forensic counseling involves working with defendants, usually in criminal cases, to determine the mental processes that led up to and were involved in commission of a crime. It is most often employed in juvenile justice cases, with the goal of matching the sentencing in the case with effective treatment. The Masters in Forensic Psychology offered by Walden prepares professionals for a similar role in providing court testimony as to the motivations and true goals for individuals involved in criminal or civil cases. Forensic psychologists are often called as expert witnesses.

2. University of Liverpool has a Master of Forensic Psychology & Criminal Investigation degree that combines training in psychology with criminal justice orientation in classes such as Psychology of Criminal Behavior, Offender Profiling & Criminal Behavior Analysis, and Psychology of the Courts. The University of Liverpool is home to a research institute called the Centre for Investigative Psychology, making it one of the academic centers for research in this field and a source of innovations in the field.
