Top Masters in Project Management Jobs

Because there are so many facets to project management, career options can be found across a number of industry sectors. The Master of Project Management degree may be part of a MBA program, offered as a specialization in a graduate management program, or as an area of concentration for a Master of Information Technology or a Master of Information Systems degree. The job market reflects this variety of educational selections. Many large corporations are looking for IT project managers today because of the surge in data-based customer relations management systems. Sales, accounting, supply chain management, production and shipping are all controlled by IT systems today and many companies need project managers to implement a data management system or to upgrade an existing corporate intranet. Our list of career opportunities is drawn from an analysis of the positions that are found in executive job listings today.

1. IT Manager - Healthcare: Medical informatics is an IT specialty with software applications and designs that are unique to the industry. However developing, upgrading or expanding a healthcare information system does not require medical training, it requires working knowledge of the IT environment and project management skills. Healthcare informatics changes with every new diagnostic technology that comes along and requires a new form of data storage.

2. Construction Project Manager: Taking a major construction project from architectural renderings to the ribbon cutting ceremony requires management of engineers, contractors, possibly union personnel, inspector's schedules, supply chain management and a careful watch on budget allocations. Many of these skills involve sophisticated software and budgeting ability more so than construction experience although project managers on large projects always have some level of experience in construction or design or project management on a smaller scale.

3. Public Works Project Manager: This is another position where engineers are the driving force for project design but with large scale efforts, a project manager to coordinate multiple engineering efforts is necessary. Beyond that, moving into the construction phase also requires project management from a professional who can manage budgeting and finance issues as well as procurement, personnel and schedules.

4. IT - Global Scaling: Multinational firms that are merging databases with a newly acquired division, or that are converting an intranet to meet international needs hire IT project management experts to internationalize their network functions. This type of project management may require oversight of programmers, network analysts and database administrators from several nations, speaking several languages and using more than one platform. Global project management is a profession that requires well developed diplomatic skills and team leadership abilities.

5. Network Implementation: Work in this field may involve scaling up a network or implementing new features such as an information security program. Some companies prefer to hire engineers for this work and at a small scale this sort of work is an engineering project. But with larger firms or larger, multi-task projects that involve network design and implementation and expansion, a project manager is necessary to assemble all of the activity into a comprehensive, focused effort.

6. Clinical Research: In the pharmaceuticals business there is a constant need for quality oversight of clinical research data. These sorts of research programs are designed to meet FDA standards and to that end, all records relating to the results of clinical trials or legacy research must be meticulously assembled and documented. When the principal reporting issues are regulatory, a science background may be of less importance.

7. Business Applications Project Manager: Firms that are expanding and need a project manager to scale up documents management, database applications, communications programs or team project development applications often look for a project manager to report to the CIO and take charge of the teams who are implementing these changes. While project managers in these positions need to grasp the platform technology they do not necessarily have to understand the minute details of all programs involved.

8. Web Project Manager: Much of the project management work with websites today involves integrating new marketing or sales functions, added features or additional communications components such as Facebook and Twitter. The social networking sites have become too large and too popular to be ignored by firms who are proactive in their marketing efforts; a project manager with IT background can help build a seamless integration of multiple platforms for firms that rely on Internet business.

9. CRM Project Management: Many of the project management jobs in this sector involve software from Oracle or SAP. In many cases it may involve incorporating new elements into the base software for business management. A supply chain management function, a marketing program that utilizes the customer data base - these are the types of projects that require comprehensive management in order to add to and not disturb the functionality of the baseline programs.

10. Social Network/e-Business Integration: As technical as this position sounds, companies that advertise for it are often looking with someone who has a MBA along with some IT background. It's a good fit for a project manager that has obtained training through a business program. Most businesses with an online component are trying to figure out how to use the social network services to economic advantage and no one has found the perfect model yet. Applying business principals to these digital communication tools is an excellent job opportunity.
