Master of Arts in School Counseling:
This program is for students who are interested in the profession of school counselor. This program requires a large amount of in-depth research and a thesis at the end of the program. The program begins with a core counseling education. Students learn about current issues in the school counseling field. Students also learn about diagnosis of mental health conditions, working with certain populations, and community and education challenges and issues. Students also will pick an area of concentration. Students will work closely with faculty members and advisors to complete their master's theses. They will also have to do some clinical research that will give them a more advanced understanding of the school counseling field. Students who complete this program often go on to become school counselors. Others will work in administrative positions, where they advise and influence policy. Students also have the option to apply to PhD degree programs.
Master of Education in School Counseling:
This is a program that does not require a thesis. This program is more of a hands-on training for students who are less concerned with research and scholarship and more concerned with practice. Students will begin with a core counseling education. Students learn about issues and challenges in today's school counseling profession. Students also learn about various mental disorders and social challenges that are facing students in America's private and public schools today. Students work closely with faculty advisors to complete independent projects. Students who complete this program are qualified to serve as certified school counselors. Students also have the option to apply to PhD degree programs.
PhD in School Counseling:
This program is for students who have already earned master degrees in school counseling. This program is for students who would like to further research and understand key concepts in the school counseling profession. Students begin by picking individual areas of study. Students work closely with faculty advisors to complete PhD dissertations that will then be defended before an academic panel. Students who complete this program can teach school counseling and psychology at the undergraduate and graduate level. They will also occupy high-level administrative and government positions where they will write and influence policy as it related to school counseling.
