University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Education:

Master of Education in Counseling:

This is an online master of education program. Students begin the program by declaring areas of concentration. Students then take courses in the core concepts and issues in school counseling. Students learn about psychological issues, sociological issues, and economic issues that will affect the behaviors of students. Students may be asked to prepare master's thesis papers. Students may also have to take a number of classes from other disciplines, colleges and departments, depending on the declared areas of study. Students may take classes in subjects such as psychology, sociology, and economics. These classes with add to students' brad understanding of the counseling field. Student may also take classes in leadership and administration that will prepare them for real world contexts. Students will also have to appear on campus now and again to take part in professional meetings and also to sit for one-on-one interviews. There may be internship or experiential opportunities that will allow students to get hands-on clinical experience. This program certifies students to become school counselors. Students who complete this program may also apply to PhD degree programs.

PhD in Counseling:

This program is for students who would like to further explore and research key concepts in the field of counseling. This is a research-based program that is taken online, though students will have to travel to participate in professional meetings, seminars, interview, and clinical study. Students will also have to take classes that are outside of the education or counseling fields. Students may take classes in a number of other disciplines in order to better understand key issues in the school counseling field. Students may take classes in sociology, economics, or psychology. Students in this program declare an area of expertise and work closely with faculty advisors who help them to complete their PhD dissertations. The graduate students present and defend their dissertations before an academic panel.
